Supernatural Recap: We Need to Talk About Kevin

Once More, From the Top!
by Joshowa

Welcome back, fellow supers! How was your summer? Do any traveling? To the wine country, you say? That's nice. We'll have to get together and watch your slideshow. No, really, I insist. Just let me finish up this recap of Supernatural first.

ONE YEAR LATER!

Dean, the Monster-Killing Machine

The season begins, as these seasons often do, with Dean coming back from another dimension. He just spent a year in Purgatory, fighting, stabbing and killing all manner of horrible beasts with a weird new weapon. Yes, it sounds miserable, but it looks like Sir Deano actually got into it. The survival instinct took over and born-and-bred warrior Dean found something pure about tapping into his primal nature.

Plus, there was this one guy.

No, not Castiel, but another dude named Benny. From the look of his teeth, I'd guess he was a vampire. Benny saved Dean from another vamp, and then struck a deal to help get Dean both of them out of Purgatory. Much like a prison romance, their temporary partnership may have become something more. Dean's back, but he's keeping Benny a secret from Sam, and Benny is calling to check up on Dean, despite an agreement to go their separate ways.

Whatever happened in Purgatory has got Dean pumped to keep hunting. He's back and ready to take all Crowley et all. It's very different than dear old...

Sam, Dog Owner and Homebody

Sam, like any reasonable person who has been through what he has been through, decided to quit hunting and devote his time to taking care of his dog, his lady and his hair.

Sam finds a lover, a reenactment.
Sam: Please save this dog I ran over while distractedly jamming to some Air Supply!
Vet assistant: Calm down, you giant freak.
Lady Vet: <saves dogI've saved this animal's life! Now you must own him!
Sam: Whaaaaaaat? Butbutbut...
Lady Vet: <is horrible>
Sam: Fine, I'll keep the dog. Plus, I'm in love!
<end scene>

Sam's new lackadaisical attitude towards saving the world rubs the militant Dean the wrong way, especially when he finds out Sam has been ignoring distress calls from…

Kevin’s squatting in an old church in Iowa, living on the lam since he escaped Crowley’s clutches. It seems Crowley wanted Kevin to interpret a new prophetic tablet, but Kevin pulled a fast one and used his new demon killing knowledge to escape. Ever since, he’s been trying to reach Sam with no avail.

Also in Iowa? Kevin’s ex-girlfriend. Or at least a demon pretending to be Kevin’s ex-girlfriend. Both Crowley and the Winchesters use her to find Kevin. You see, Kevin is even a hotter commodity than ever, because the tablet told him how to close the gates of Hell and banish all demons forever.

Crowley attempts to force Kevin’s surrender by threatening the ex-girlfriend’s life, but Kevin still remembers that time she dumped him when he started hearing messages from above, so he splits. Unfortunately, this means Crowley murders the girl right in front of Kevin’s eyes, traumatizing him forever. Now, like it or not, Kevin is in for the long haul as a prophet/hunter. His loss of innocence bums Sam out, but Dean helps Kevin cope with a very non-comforting drill sergeant routine.

And that’s where we are! The Winchesters are back together, hunting demons and various baddies. They’ve both got attitudes very similar to the ones they had in season one (Dean is gung ho and mad that Sam keeps managing to find a life outside the family iz), but this time they’ve got sidekick Kevin Tran along for the ride! It’s got more promise (and more classic rock) than the last two season premiers. Here’s hoping it doesn’t get bogged down in the same tired formulas that we’ve been struggling with for the last few years.

Can you guess my favorite part of this season premier? That’s right – no Meg. May she forever be absent.

Join us next week when we go all Freud and talk about Kevin's mom!
